  • BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Manufacturing Engineering)

    Introducing the Staff

    • Program manager: Asst.Prof.Dr.Chatrpol Pakasiri 
      Asst.Prof.Dr.Chatrpol Pakasiri is responsible for all Manufacturing Engineering courses within King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. If you have any concerns that cannot be answered by another member of staff, then please see him.  
    • Lead Verifier: Dr.Lertsak Lekawat 
      Dr.Lertsak Lekawat is also responsible for the overall quality of the course and will be verifying the course for you. Staff will liaise with Dr.Lertsak Lekawat and if you have an appeal that reaches stage 2, Dr.Lertsak Lekawat will respond. 
    • Course assessors:  You will be studying a variety of units and these will be led by different tutors. They will tell you which units they are responsible for and the assessment dates that you need to adhere too.

    Program Structure

    At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector through four core units, including one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. The core units are: 

    • Unit 1: Engineering Design 
    • Unit 2: Engineering Mathematics 
    • Unit 3: Engineering Science 
    • Unit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering Project*. 

    *Unit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering Project is also the Pearson-set assignment unit.

    For the Manufacturing Engineering pathway, students take the four mandatory core units, two specialist units and an additional two optional units.

    Qualification Requirements

    • Qualification credit value: a minimum of 120 credits. This is made up of eight units, each with a value of 15 credits. 
    • Total Qualification Time (TQT) Higher National Certificate (HNC) = 1,200 hours 
    • Total Guided Learning Hours (GLH) Higher National Certificate (HNC) = 480 hours 
    • There is a required mix of core, specialist and optional units totalling 120 credits. All units are at Level 4.

    Course Delivery

    • Integrated lecture and practice sessions held primarily face-to-face
    • Classes are held in the evening Mon - Fri 17:00-19:00
    • Typical course length is 4 semesters (2 years)

  • Unit 1 Engineering Design

    Unit Learning Outcomes

    • LO1 Prepare an engineering design specification in response to a stakeholder’s design brief and requirements
    • LO2 Formulate possible technical solutions by using prepared examples of engineering design specifications
    • LO3 Prepare an engineering industry standard technical design report by using appropriate design calculations, drawings and concepts
    • LO4 Present, to an audience, a recommended technical design solution by using real examples of stakeholder briefs

    • Unit 2 Engineering Maths

      Unit Learning Outcomes

      • LO1 Identify the relevance of mathematical methods to a variety of conceptualised engineering examples
      • LO2 Investigate applications of statistical techniques to interpret, organise and present data by using appropriate computer software packages
      • LO3 Use analytical and computational methods for solving problems by relating sinusoidal wave and vector functions to their respective engineering application
      • LO4 Examine how differential and integral calculus can be used to solve engineering problems

        • Unit 8 Mechanical Principles

          • LO1 Identify solutions to problems within static mechanical systems.
          • LO2 Illustrate the effects that constraints have on the performance of a dynamic mechanical system.
          • LO3 Investigate elements of simple mechanical power transmission systems. 
          • LO4 Analyse natural and damped vibrations within translational and rotational mass-spring systems.

          • Unit 19 Electrical and Electronic Principles

            Unit Learning Outcomes

            • LO1 Apply an understanding of fundamental electrical quantities to evaluate simple circuits with constant voltages and currents.
            • LO2 Evaluate simple circuits with sinusoidal voltages and currents.
            • LO3 Describe the basis of semiconductor action, and its application to simple electronic devices. 
            • LO4 Explain the difference between digital and analogue electronics, describing simple applications of each.

            • Unit 14 Production Engineering for Manufacture

              Unit Learning Outcomes

              • LO1 Illustrate the role and purpose of production engineering and its relationship with the other elements of a manufacturing system.
              • LO2 Select the most appropriate production processes and associated facility arrangements, for manufacturing products of different material types. 
              • LO3 Analyse how a production system can incorporate a number of different production processes for a given product or assembly.
              • LO4 Explore the effectiveness of a production system in terms of its operation within the wider manufacturing system.

              • Unit 17 Quality and Process Improvement

                Unit Learning Outcomes

                • LO1 Illustrate the applications of statistical process control when applied in an industrial environment to improve efficiency.
                • LO2 Analyse cost effective quality control tools.
                • LO3 Determine the role of standards in improving efficiency, meeting customer requirements and opening up new opportunities for trade. 
                • LO4 Analyse the importance of Total Quality Management and continuous improvement in manufacturing environments.

                • Unit 4 Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)

                  Unit Learning Outcomes

                  • LO1 Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem.
                  • LO2 Evaluate potential solutions for an identified engineering problem. 
                  • LO3 Demonstrate a range of critical analysis and evaluation techniques to analyse and test the validity of design decisions
                  • LO4 Produce a project report outlining and reflecting on the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages.
